In college, each student is motivated to succeed by a combination of things. That’s why it makes sense for students to discover and utilize the motivators that effectively push them forward, toward their most important goals. Here are some of the motivators that help students find success.

1. Self-Realization – College is a time when students can discover, become and experience the person they want to be. When they are motivated in this way, they will find college to be a fun and exciting time, a time when they can explore a variety of courses, join interesting clubs, participate in campus activities, meet interesting people, explore their capabilities and identify their passions. As they begin to learn and grow, they will be motivated to push those limits and find the person who resides inside.

2. Personal Satisfaction – Some students take pride in facing the challenges of college and coming through it all having done well. They are motivated internally and get a great deal of personal satisfaction from doing a good job.

3. Challenge – There are students are motivated by a challenge. They see college as a big challenge, one that requires them to fight for success. Students who have the personality, operating style and self-confidence to face and overcome challenges will do well in this environment because they won’t allow themselves to fail.

4. Fear – For some students, fear is a good motivator. These students do well in college because they don’t want to lose their scholarships, don’t want graduate without a job, don’t want to fail out and still have large loan repayments and don’t want to anger or embarrass their families.

5. Joy of Learning – Some students truly love the college environment. They enjoy learning and devour information on subjects that turn them on. They strive to become knowledge experts, thought leaders and information repositories. The need for information motivates them.

6. A Clear Purpose – When students head off to college with a clear and single-minded purpose, they are usually motivated to do well. They see college as a means to an end, one that is important to them. On the other hand, students who enter college with no clear purpose in mind are less likely to perform well. They don’t place a high value on a college education because they don’t see how a college education will help them get where they want to go. It serves no purpose for them.

7. Approval – Many students seek and are motivated by praise, encouragement and recognition for good work. When students are good at something and achieve exceptional results, their status in that environment goes up. When people compliment them, point them out as examples and look up to them, they shine.

8. Life Goals – Students frequently see their college education as a launching pad to their futures. A good education can lead to a good job, money, security and all of the trappings of success. They are motivated to do well because college will help them build a better future.

9. Aid Others – Some students are motivated by the need to help others. To reach their goal, they must perform well in college. A college education will to enable them fulfill their dream of serving others. They know that nurses, teachers, caregivers, counselors and other helpers can only get started with a good education.

Everyone is motivated by something. In fact, most college students are motivated by a combination of factors. Therefore, wise students recognize and utilize their own personal motivators. They understand that motivated students will always perform at a higher level than students who are unmotivated and uninspired.

It Just Doesn’t Work That Way

Too many students wait until they enter their senior year or may even graduate before they start giving much thought to their job search. That strategy doesn’t impress the employers with the most desirable jobs.

Students who ignore the needs, wants and expectations

of the best employers in their fields of interest

will not be rewarded with impressive job offers.

It just doesn’t work that way!

When disappointed students ask successful students about the secrets to their success, they don’t like the answers. The most successful students:

1. Identify a clear goal (target)

2. Select a major and minor that supports the goal

3. Do their best in the classroom

4. Research and understand target employer expectations

5. Develop a multi-year plan with progressive steps

6. Gain job-related experience through campus and work activities

7. Cultivate references from professors and employers

8. Build a list of significant and job-related accomplishments

9. Are prepared to provide examples and tell interesting stories

All of this should be understood by students before they finish the second year of college. Knowing where they want to go is good. However, it is the follow-through during the junior and senior years that will determine their level of success in their target job market.

The most successful students understand that great jobs are not won or lost during interviews. Job offers are earned during the 2nd, 3rd and 4th years of college in the classroom, campus activities and work experience.

Wise students actively pursue and fight for the jobs they want most.

Less disciplined students settle for the jobs they are offered.

If you compare the list that follows to the list above, it should be clear which group of students will end up with job offers from the employers that pay well and have career potential.

The least successful students:

1. Have no clear goal or target

2. Cannot be sure their major and minor will be supportive

3. Do not excel in the classroom, campus activities or at work

4. Don’t know what employers expect of them

5. Have no plan to follow

6. Participate in work and activities unrelated to the jobs they seek

7. Make no effort to cultivate impressive references

8. Have few accomplishments that will impress employers

9. Develop no examples and stories to use during interviews

Students who follow the first list will have more and better employment choices and opportunities than students who follow the second list. That should be obvious.

Clear thinking and hard work are not ingrained in every student. Some students never recognize that they have to compete for good jobs and therefore fail to embrace the job search preparation activities that help to ensure employment success. College is not for everyone, but that does not mean you shouldn’t pursue some sort of higher education or job training. When you think about your future, what do you envision? Are you doing something you love, or are you just working for a paycheck?

How to choose between 4-year colleges and technical schools:

Ask yourself these questions and then consider the benefits and disadvantages of each type of school.

What are your goals? Do you have a specific career goal? What are your educational goals? Do you want to learn as much as you can about a variety of subjects? Do you want to learn as much as you can about one specific topic (become an expert)?

What are your strengths? Weaknesses? Would you benefit from a shorter more targeted program?

Be a consumer. Check equipment; is it new and up-to-date? How does it compare to the equipment you will be using on the job? Trust me, this can be tedious but it is quite important. After graduation I realized I should have taken more time to research the computer programs employers expected me to know for technical writing jobs. Had I been better informed, I could have taken extra courses dealing specifically with those programs.

Investigate the following: campus size, current and former students, faculty and staff;

Find out if the school is accredited and licensed; Do they make extraordinary claims? Will your credits be transferable?

4-year Colleges

Some people like to learn just for the sake of learning, while some are more focused and driven and use school as a steppingstone for job advancement. If you are interested in more scholarly pursuits a traditional 4-year college might be your best option.

Benefits: liberal arts training applies to many fields, diverse topics to explore, prestige, “college life”

Disadvantages: expensive, time consuming, may get degree in area you no longer wish to pursue, high admission standards and prerequisites, job market may be slower upon graduation-may require additional training

Technical Schools

If college was for everyone, technical schools would not exist. Some people may feel a stigma is attached to technical schools. In a society where attending college has become standard, we lose sight of the value of skills training. People feel abnormal and may be angry if they don’t want to go to college but feel pressured to do so anyway.

Benefits: shorter duration, focused programs, easier admission standards, flexible scheduling, certifications not necessarily offered at 4-year colleges, hands on training

Disadvantages: may be viewed as less prestigious, can be expensive, may be less room for exploration of other subjects, accreditation, for-profit institutions

Sororities – Are Rush and Recruitment the Same Thing?

Sorority recruitment for the Panhellenic community on your campus may be called “Recruitment” or “Rush.” The word “rush” was coined in the 1920s when students who were upperclass members of fraternities and sororities would rush the train platforms where new students arrived at college.   In the 1990s, Panhellenic groups began changing the terminology for this process to more closely acknowledge the process at hand: membership recruitment.  

Your campus may call it either recruitment or rush, and you’ll probably hear both terms used interchangeably. It might be easiest if you consider “recruitment” to be the formal name and “rush” to be the informal name.

Rush is used both as a noun and a verb. In the noun form, a woman can go through the sorority recruitment process called “rush.” As a verb, “rush” means to participate in sorority recruitment. A woman can “rush” a certain chapter, or a sorority sister can “rush” a potential member. This does not mean that one person hurries another along. It means the sorority sister and prospective member are in the process of determining if they are a good match.

If you are planning to participate in sorority recruitment on your campus, you are in good company. No matter the size of the Greek community on your campus, there are thousands of women in the same position as you right now. About 80,000 women join National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) sororities across North America each year.  There are 2,937 collegiate sorority chapters on 650 campuses across the US and Canada. 

Despite an economic recession, the number of women joining sororities has not decreased.  College and university campuses across North America are continuing to see a rising interest in sorority communities.
